Relationship Counseling
There are so many reasons that you and your partner might be ready to seek support from a therapist. Maybe you haven’t felt connected in a really long time. Maybe there is an injury between the two of you that you haven’t been able to resolve together. Maybe one or both of you are wanting something different from the relationship and haven’t been able to get it. Maybe you have changed in ways that are starting to feel incompatible. Maybe you had children and have found your relationship different now that you are parents. Maybe the relationship is being strained by a health issue or external crisis. Maybe you just keep fighting and you don’t know why.
I can create a safe, gentle space where the two of you can start having a different experience when you try to turn towards each other. My goal is for your relationship to feel like a place where you can feel safe, loved, accepted and understood. I want to help you create the intimacy and closeness that you’ve always wanted with your partner. After some time in therapy, people say they have never felt more connected.
What is Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)?
When I work with partnerships, I primarily work from an EFT framework. Emotionally Focused Therapy is an evidence-based method for helping partners identify negative interaction patterns that keep them from connecting in the way they are hoping for. EFT is a relational model that is based on principles of attachment. Basically, we are wired to develop deep, interconnected bonds with our closest loved ones. Distressingly, those we love most can also bring out our worst perceptions, fears and responses. Patterns we learned about connection when we were children can also interfere with being in the relationship with our partner that we’d like to have. In therapy, we can slow down the painful fights you and your partner keep having and figure out how to have the conversation that you are both wanting instead. Partners who have gone through EFT counseling report learning new ways to relate and a deepened bond. This work can help you feel excited about your relationship. I welcome folks exploring ENM dynamics.
